Amputee Rehab Program

Norwichtown at Harwich offers a specialized rehab program for amputees. Norwichtown was approached by two lower-extremity amputees who knew rehab was possible and developed a groundbreaking rehab program specifically for amputees. In response to the community’s needs, Norwichtown installed a rail/rehabilitation track harness system to help those who were told that they would never walk again. The rail/rehabilitation harness helps them stand and restore balance for walking. This special equipment eliminates the fear of falling and helps to restore confidence in patients so they can achieve faster progress and results. Norwichtown is the first facility in Connecticut to utilize this special equipment.

For all amputees, we treat the whole patient for their loss, not only assisting with their physical needs, but providing emotional counseling and support through our Social Work Department. Our team works with the patient’s doctor and surgeon throughout their rehab at Norwichtown. Our team works with our patients around the clock to assure the fullest program and care is provided during their stay. We can assist recent amputees as well as patients who have had an amputation in the past but may have the capability to achieve better functioning.

New amputees are measured for a “crash helmet” that is worn over the wound to protect the area while beginning initial rehab. We ensure the correct fitting prosthesis, whether it is fitted at our facility or was fitted at the hospital.

Coming Full Circle
